Fractures and Dislocations

What are Fractures and Dislocations?

A fracture refers to a broken bone, and a dislocation refers to a bone coming out of joint. Common areas for a fracture include the collarbone (clavicle), the upper part of the humerus (proximal humerus), the lower part of the wrist (distal radius), and the scaphoid. Some of these fractures are particularly associated with low density bones (osteoporosis), or high energy injuries like a fall from a bicycle or during contact sports.

Common areas for dislocations are the shoulder and AC (acromioclavicular) joints. The elbow can dislocate with high energy injuries.

How is it treated non-operatively?

Generally, if the fractured or broken ends of the bone have not moved much from their usual location, then the break can be treated without an operation. This may mean splinting or immobilisation in some form such as a cast or sling, and usually requires ongoing follow-up. Every patient requires an individualised management and rehabilitation plan.

How is it treated operatively?

If the fracture is an unstable pattern or at a higher risk of not healing (non-union), then Dr Yu may recommend surgery. The type of surgery including incisions, implants, recovery and rehabilitation will be tailored for each patient and their injury. Rest assured, Dr Yu understands the anxiety, uncertainty and frustration of traumatic injuries, and treats all of his patients like that of a family member going through the same problem.

My goals as a surgeon are to relieve your pain, restore your function, and return you back to doing what you love.
